Is getting another charging cable. iPhone XS if you care. It’s a few mm larger than my 7, and has a much nicer screen.
Also turkeys in the yard.

Also taking pics is cool on new phone day. You made a significant jump in camera tech.
Yo, I can actually do a serious turkey gobble, but I won’t.

Imagine using a charging cable with an easily-damaged proprietary connector
This post was brought to you buy the USB-C Gang

I think that’s the docking cable that plugs into my Dell. I don’t have high expectations for that connection.

Apple refurb? I also recently got an XS, coming from an 8. Got mine from Amazon (came with a crappy cable and charger, but I didn’t need them). “Renewed”, whatever that means. $570 for a 256GB model.
I do miss Touch ID. Oh well...

Always nice to get a new cord! Best thing about my newest Apple phone however was wireless charging. Also, FaceID.

It’s funny how case specific it seems to be. Touch ID bugged the heck out of me because if my hands were even a little cold or if I had put on hand lotion recently, it wouldn’t work. But FaceID has been a revelation for me. It works flawlessly every time.
My wife had TouchID work reliably all the time (even though she has Raynaud’s ), but FaceID is giving her trouble. Weird.

That must be why they were so eager to sell it from existing stock from Verizon, Apple has gone to the 11 now... Oh well I can’t complain since I don’t pay for the device or usage.

Ah... yeah. There are a few times each day where I’ll have to take an extra second to move or uncover my face to unlock my phone, but it’s no big deal. The missing grip-point is a real thing, though.

The only issue about grip that I’ve found is that pushing the power and volume down together takes a screen shot, and that’s a common action for me, since the two buttons are opposite each other. I end up deleting lots of accidental screen shots.
I went for a medium durability but still slim case. I’m jealous of those who can get by with a naked phone and never get a scratch, but I end up with the infrequent but significant damage, like cracking a screen or a corner dent.

FaceID doesn’t work reliably for me either. I had to turn off the most secure version of it and it’s still only about 50/50. Does she have vision problems? It seems to be unhappy when you can’t focus on the phone at the distance it’s set to work.

I think it depends on your situation. For me, I would have to plug in the cord behind my night stand, and I left it there as my primary charging station. But, i f I went to grab it in the dark or accidentally pulled on it, it would come unplugged from the wall. I would also have to reach over and use two hands to unplug or plug the cable. It seems lazy when I type it out, but it’s so much nicer for me to just drop it on the pad or grab and go and not have to deal with cords. It’s also nice to not have to worry about the cord getting worn over time from handling.

I have a bit of lazy eye - not the typical kind, where it’s obvious they aren’t pointing the same way, but just an eye that doesn’t tend to focus unless forced. FaceID is more reliable if I have my glasses on and I make an effort to focus on the phone, but without glasses or contacts it’s hopeless.

Yo same! When I got my new phone I thought, “ok I gotta get a wireless charger now!” Then I thought, “yeah ok but what does that do besides eliminate the less than one second it takes to plug in a charging cable?”

My wife does have vision problems, but not the same as yours. She can focus fine with her glasses, and my experience would seem to say that glasses don’t inhibit it. But really it al seems to be empirical. It would be nice if they had a virtual TouchID feature on the screen so you could choose your option, but I’m not a phone engineer.

Here’s what I like about wireless charging: every cell phone that I’ve owned in my life has eventually reached the point where it doesn’t like to charge anymore without some encouragement. Charging ports go bad over time, and it’s annoying to have to replace a phone because you can’t get a charging cable to fire snugly. But with wireless charging, I just set my phone on a small pad every night, and in the morning it’s charged. No cables needed. And sure, I still occasionally plug in my phone. But that charging port will last a lot longer because it doesn’t get used every single day.
I suppose it also depends on how long you keep your phone. Do you get a new one every two years, or do you keep it until it breaks? If you keep it until it breaks, wireless charging gives you two ways to charge your phone in the event that one stops working.

It eliminates the wear and tear on your charging cable and port. It also gives you a backup method of charging in the event that your charging port stops working.

I thought it was really cool and bought a wireless charger. And then found that the charger I got needed to be unplugged and plugged back in every couple days because it needed to be reset to work. And also I use a phone case that holds my license and debit card, so I have to take those out every time I use the wireless charger, so now it’s in a drawer in my desk and I just plug the phone in.

I’ve kept my last two phones until they ran out of space or weren’t supported , and I’ve never had an issue with the charging ports . My 5S still works fine (as a security camera).
I guess it could be cool in a car that doesn’t have Bluetooth or USB so you could connect an audio cable and still charge the phone?

As for running out of space, can’t you get a bigger microSD card?
And as for charging and using an audio cable at the same time, that isn’t an issue with Androids.

T he only android phone I’ve used (for camera purposes and not as a phone) is also the only one that melted it’s charging port. So maybe we don’t want to make this a brand argument.
Chuckles
> smobgirl
02/24/2020 at 17:33 | 0 |
Oh I didn’t mean to imply that Androids are better, just that it’s a different set of problems. All of my cell phones, and I mean going back to my Motorola flip phone days, have eventually had charging problems. My last Samsung without wireless charging (a Galaxy S5) was no exception. So that's why I like it. I have a Galaxy S8 and I love that i don't have to plug it in at night. The charging pad just sits on my dresser and never requires attention. You never had charging issues with your Apple products, so you don't care about wireless charging. But your phones have their own set of problems. There is no perfect phone.
smobgirl

I guess my wireless charging issue was that my charger pad broke much faster than the usual Apple charging cord breaks, so that’s saying something

iPhones don’t do expandable card storage.
They used to have an aux port and charging port, but they got rid of the aux in favor of one port to rule them all.
